30 Days of Knitting: Day #4

How did you learn how to knit?

Truthfully it was a lot of trial and error. I was maybe 8-9 and was home sick from school. I probably wasn't that ill since I was well enough to go searching through storage boxes in my mom's room. I think I was curious and always wondered what was inside. I found a lot of yarn and some crochet WIPs. Initially I wanted to learn how to crochet, but it proved to be much too difficult. For whatever reason I could not grasp the loop concept. It pretty much alluded me until I was 16-17 when one day I just got it. It was like a light being switched on. Since I gave up on that, I wanted to knit.

I told my mom and she said it'd been a long time since she had knitted. She could remember how to knit, but was having trouble on remembering how to cast on. Since this was before the days of hopping on the internet and looking up a video on YouTube she winged it. Looking back I don't think it was the standard method, but hey, it worked. I sat and tried to knit my little sampler. Balancing the needles was awkward, but I was determined to figure it out. My stitches were all different sizes heh. It was so bad. I didn't make anything except for bad samplers.

I remember getting a weaving kit. It wasn't quite knitting, but it had a plastic knitting spool. I must've made yards and yards of i-cord with that thing. XD Eventually I broke it... so I was given a more durable version made of wood and metal. I wish I knew where it was... I'm sure it's in a box somewhere.

Eventually I wanted to branch out and actually create things. All I had was a basic knowledge of knitting and purling. So, I got this book: Knitting for Dummies. It's served me as a good resource book and I learned much from it. And if it wasn't in there or I still needed help I turned to Knitty.

There are still tons of things I don't know about knitting (and crocheting). My go to has been to search the internet for tutorials. I've found YouTube to be the best source as I can see exactly how something is done. I prefer to learn techniques and then experiment with how I can use them. Sometimes I'm successful and other times it's a complete failure. XD
